Shiksha Saathi
For my Innovation Seminar, I was asked to create a business model canvas for an imagined product/service. Shiksha Saathi is a conceptualized portable, battery-powered educational device designed to address the challenges faced by teachers in low-resource environments. While I did not create a physical prototype, I developed a clear framework for its functionality, identifying essential components such as a LED projector, lithium-ion battery, speaker, microphone, and IR touch sensors for interactivity. I also designed a basic visual prototype using Typeface, focusing on how the device integrates offline content storage and SaaS analytics to empower teachers and track learning outcomes. This approach allowed me to refine the product’s usability, features, and impact before moving to physical development.
Understanding Perspectives
Creating an empathy map for teachers in government schools in Mumbai allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of their unique challenges and aspirations. By mapping out what these teachers think, feel, say, do, see, hear, and experience, I could step into their shoes and better comprehend the complexities they face in their roles. This exercise highlighted the constraints they encounter, such as limited resources, high student-to-teacher ratios, and the impact of socio-economic factors on their students’ lives. It also illuminated their commitment to student success, their desire for personal and professional growth, and their sense of purpose despite the obstacles.
This activity fosters empathy by allowing me to view their experiences from their perspective, helping me to see both the difficulties and the values that drive them. Understanding their realities helps inform more effective and supportive strategies for improving education quality—strategies that address both the practical and emotional needs of these teachers and empower them to thrive in their roles.
